Ali Aird
My name is Ali, and I’m a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying).
Before becoming a psychotherapist, I had a career in research, with a background in Mad studies, semiotics, and communication studies. My academic work focused on emotional distress, meaning, and identity – asking questions about what it means to feel deeply and how that intersects with power and marginalization. I bring this lens to my work with clients, balancing a deep interest in what it feels like to be who you are with a curiosity about the structures and forces that shape your experience of the world. These questions are always important, but they take on new meaning in work with queer-identified clients and those facing marginalization from multiple directions.
My treatment specialties include queerness and identity, life transitions, trauma, spirituality, and relationship issues. As an integrative psychotherapist, I draw on principles and techniques from psychodynamic, somatic, and emotion-focused traditions.

Whether you are looking for insight and healing around a specific issue or have come to
a moment where it feels right or necessary to examine your relationship to the life you
are leading; therapy is an excellent tool. Relational therapy works with the old patterns
and dynamics that have created the scaffolding we carry with us into our current lives
and relationships. Together, client and therapist work to explore the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’
and in doing so create space for new ways of being in relationship, both with ourselves
and with others.
I am a therapist-in-training under supervision at Toronto Institute of Relational
Psychotherapy (TIRP) and a student member of the Ontario Society of Registered
Psychotherapy (OSRP).
My path includes a 20-year career in the performing arts and over a decade working in
reproductive rights and access to care. I have a M.A in Developmental Psychology
from Carleton University.
I work from a trauma informed framework and my practice is grounded in an inclusive
lens that acknowledges the colonial history of the spaces we inhabit.
Areas of interest include childhood trauma, PTSD, difficult relationships, divorce, life
transitions, loss, and grief.

I believe that every individual has a right to live in a place of vivacious agency, where your desires and needs are allowed to be actualized. You have a right to feel the safety and internal nourishment offered in your own body and to feel supported by your relationships as you navigate through life.
I support individuals through embodied approaches to psychotherapy centered in somatics and dance/movement therapy. In talk therapy, words are used as the primary material to "unpack" the emotional aspects of a person's experience. I use both words as well as connection to sensory, emotional, and creative explorations to support the goals you are working towards.
I am trained as Dance Movement Therapist (DMT) through the National Centre for Dance Therapy, Montreal. I am practicing as a pre-licenced psychotherapist (under supervision) and have completed advanced training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. I bridge expressive arts, somatics and neurobiology treatment of trauma within my practice.
I look forward to working with you today. Book a consult at somatichealing.ca

Maybe you have tried therapy before and it has helped you work through certain feelings or get through a specific crisis. But maybe you still find yourself repeating the same behaviors in subtle ways—perhaps until they become not so subtle and you find yourself back in therapy, in the midst of another crisis, one that eerily echoes your past experiences. You want not just to work through present issues, but also to delve deeper into your personality and life experiences to come to a better understanding of who you are, where you come from, and what your values are—with the goal of becoming the person you want and are able to be.
Together, we will explore your past and present, thoughts and feelings, in order to help you gain a more holistic understanding of yourself and your potential. My background is in philosophy and I believe that talk therapy can lead to genuine connection and enable self-discovery and self-understanding.
If any of the above sounds intriguing, please feel free to contact me. I am open to new clients, especially those looking to dig deeper. I am seeing clients both in-person and virtually. Therapy can be truly transformative; sometimes it just takes finding the right person to connect with.

Sometimes we can feel disconnected from ourselves or from those close to us. Perhaps there are strong emotions pulling in many directions all at once, or a numbness with no explanation at all. In such times we feel anxious, overwhelmed and alone. There is safety in feeling accompanied by someone who cares, and can help find balance again. I believe our feelings can be great teachers, though often confusing. In this way, I believe we do have the answers within us. Unlocking them is a process: giving voice to emotions, being seen and understood, discovering a new awareness, taking steps gently in a new direction.
My own journey has many twists and turns, from first generation Canadian, an academic career in mathematics, travel and living abroad, finding new passions in music, dance and languages, to now therapist. I want to hear your story, how you connect with others and the world. My style is relational, with some somatic techniques from hakomi. In this way, we can learn and discover together, and find a way to healing and growth.
